Jason's post really made me think about when I first started playing. I honestly didnt really have a lot of people "teach" me much of anything. I learned the game by going to a lot of Dan Doublers tournaments and basically just watching. When I first started playing I would go and only play goalie wars and Beginner singles and maybe doubles if I could talk someone into playing. But I watched... and watched... and watched EVERYONE play, and I picked up little parts of everyone's games and made them my own. And I got better and better...
Which brings me to the topic of my post. What is the state of foosball here in Iowa? I know for one, here in the Quad Cities, we have only played 1 DYP in about 2 months, simply because people have other things going on and it just isnt worth going and playing with 4 people.
What about in Des Moines? Waterloo? There is no more foos in Cedar Rapids... right? Is the Freakin Puerto Rican still doing tournys? What are your guys' turnouts like anymore?
What do we have to do to revive foosball here in Iowa? Is it possible? Is it even worth trying to save? We havnt had a 'State' tournament in Iowa in how long now? Would Mary Moore even consider coming here and putting on a tournament?

Discuss....

Tom,
I think the fact that there are no responses to your post speaks volumes. I honestly don't know what we, as a foosball community, can do to beef up our local tournies, get new players and run a big fun tourney here in IA.
I know Ken and I try to get up to W'loo when we can to help it stay alive. The general feeling I get from CR IC players is that we should be playing here because many, many nights the out of towners out number the locals. I wouldn't do that, because personally I want Suz's tourney to stay.
Several of us talked at the last tourney in W'loo and said at the next bring we would all bring someone who hasn't been playing there and try to get their foos fever up again.
It would be nice if we could all brainstorm realistic ideas to help our cause. I think, for me personally, a Friday night draw or bring for that matter, should not be so intense that it scares away the newer player. I know I am guilty of seriousness. I just want to get better, but to gain players, it cannot be only about winning.
All IMHO,
Stayce

Des Moines tournies haven't been doing too badly. We still turn out a consistent 7 to 8 teams each week at least. We've have lost a few players here and there recently due to people relocating, and others possibly due to lack of interest or just busy doing other things. We tried reducing the entry fee from $10 to $5, but that didn't seem to do a whole lot. I kinda wish we found a more fooz friendly bar that might put up some more dough in the pot so we could entice more players to show up. There might be a bar in Ames that may be more foos friendly, however I doubt people would travel from Des Moines to Ames when some already grumble about driving across town to the bar we currently play at.

And I feel like mentioning again, that there may be limited responses on the forum because no new players can sign up and participate on this site. I haven't been able to get ahold of Jeff to fix the issues.

I show up to Desmoines to play with a multiple of different people every week usually numbering 2 to 4 extra the problem i have is they get beat on or griiiipped on for not being verry good and so they only play here in collins. There is a group of around 10 foosers in a town of about 465 people and that says that there is still love for the game if we could get the game out there and introduce it to people the way I have introduced it to the locals in my community.
but hey your guess is as good as mine on how to do that

Totally agree with you Stayce... there have been 32 views on this topic and only two responses.
It would be really awesome if you got foos started back up in CR, and I totally understand about wanting to keep Suz's tournament going. Unfortunatly it is just too far of a hike (2 hrs) for people here to make it to Waterloo, unless it is something a little bigger than just a BYP. I would def be more likely to attend if it started early like around noon and there was a BYP/Singles/DYP kind of thing.
What about Tommy's bar? Has he showed any interest in starting foos back up at all? Would love to be able to have a tournament there on the weekend. I am sure we would be able to bring some people from here up for that...

Would love to get something descent sized going on here but we dont really have a location, let alone vendor who can get us the tables. We have actually thought about throwing a tournament on home models and possibly have it be an outside tournament! However, those plans have kind of fizzled out with lack of interest from our locals...

I don't know how but some of us are just going to have to step up to the plate and start bringing new players into this game and really teach them, not just show them a few cool tricks but really work with them on a one on one basis. I'm looking into seeing what the local youth centers have for foosball if anything at all and I'm going to offer my knowledge of things if they are game for it. I'm also working with some of our regular players as well and offering my advice and observations to help them become more competitive against the big guns around here. I even tell them my weaknesses just so they can exploit them which forces me to have to overcome them in order to hang in there. 3 weeks in the finals for me must be helping me a little bit. I'm exempt from this last week. I drew a total newbie that spun the rods , but guess what...I am going to teach this guy to play the game in a tournament style format and to play with orthodox fundamentals simply because he shows a ton of interest in learning and is an excellent listener...Who knows what may become of it. The sky is the limit.

Jerry , I'm giving your sister lessons cause she really wants to learn. She shows promise she's just got to want it bad enough to put the quality time in to practice what I've shown her so far. Also, maybe I can come up there and work with some of your other local players too.
